Week of April 24 - May 4

Students' belongings may be picked up at Hawkwood School this week:

Grade 3 - Wednesday, April 29th, 2020
A to L = 9:00 to 10:30am
M to Z = 10.30am to 11.30am

If parents wish to pick up all of their children’s belongings at once, they just need to call Mrs. Leong in the office to arrange this. You can get all of your children’s things at one time if you just let her know ahead of time.

This is also a good time to return all Hawkwood School library books. There are a few students from our class who have library books at home.

Week of April 6-10, 2020

Thursday, April 9, 2020

Tomorrow it is Good Friday, and therefore it is a holiday.

On Monday, April 13, Mrs. Mason will be attending some very informational online webinars to learn more about online learning and ways she can make it better!

A new version of the recording of The One and Only Ivan, read by Mrs. Mason, will be available in the classroom.  We heard that the audio would not play when one of our students tried it today.  The new version should work on all devices.  Please be sure to listen to the sections of the novel as they are posted.  We will be assigning work related to the novel, so it is important to stay up to date with the story.

Please continue to work on the assignments that were posted last Monday.  On Tuesday, April 14, we will be adding a new set of assignments in the Classwork section of the classroom.

Wishing everyone a happy Easter weekend.

Please visit the Google Classroom and listen to the recording Mrs. Mason made of The One and Only Ivan, pgs. 117-143.  Ms. Mawani's class has already finished it, and Ms. Yong's class is almost done, so we have to catch up!

We have had some activity in our Google Classroom.  Thank you to those students who have submitted work.  I have enjoyed seeing it, especially the responses to "How Have You Been?"

You may have questions about completing and submitting work in the Google Classroom.  For those who have not yet seen the instructions written by Mrs. Day, here they are:

Steps:
Read the assignment. Then decide if you are going to do the work directly on the computer or if you will do it on paper.

If you are going to do it on the computer, follow these steps:

  2. Click + Add or Create
  3. Choose Create New Doc (or other tool)
  4. Do the work in the document.

  8. Click Upload and wait for the files to load.
  9. The upload box automatically closes and returns you to the assignment.
  10. Click Turn in

*** If you have an iPhone, you can use the Notes application to scan documents. Open Notes, create a new note, choose camera and then the option to Scan Documents is right on top.

Steps
  1. Open the assignment
  2. Click on the worksheet in the Your Work area
  3. Do the work
  4. Return to Classwork page
  5. Click Turn in

Any work can be unsubmitted and refined after receiving feedback from teachers up until the Due Date.

Remember to do a little work each day.  Please do it thoughtfully.

Here are some chicken and egg jokes for you:

Q: What kind of egg lives by the sea? A: An egg shell

Q: What do you call an egg laying in a garden?   A: An egg plant

Week of March 30 - April 3, 2020

April 3, 2020

Hip Hip Hooray

Thank you to all of the students who were able to attend our class meeting yesterday.  I loved seeing your faces again.

Our Google Classroom is almost ready to go and our class code will be sent out by Monday afternoon!  Students, please check your ____@educbe.ca account Monday. Here are some useful links to help you become familiar with our virtual classroom:

Once you have access to our classroom, the week of April 6-10 learning plan will have been uploaded.  Please have the activities submitted by 9 am the following Monday.  For example, next week's assignments will be due on Monday, April 13th.

I understand that it will be challenging for families to work from home while trying to help their child(ren) facilitate these tasks.  If the workload seems too overwhelming or time consuming please let me know and I'll try my best to help modify tasks.  We can also extend the due date if needed.

As a grade team, we are trying our best to keep these lessons simple and easy to follow.  You'll be able to print out some of the activities if you'd like to do so.  If you don't have access to a printer, that's okay!  We are endeavouring to make the templates easy to replicate with pencil and paper.

We would like to thank all of our families for being so resilient.  Please know that we are here to help you!

Mrs. Mason

Hi Grade 3 Families,

Look who has come to say hello!  Yes, it's Mitchell, and he is certainly missing all of you.

Please keep an eye out for an email from me this afternoon outlining some of the next steps for learning adventures. I will also be phoning students over the next couple of days to check in and respond to any questions from the email. You need to know that you are missed at school but we are really intrigued about what lies ahead for us, and we will be sharing details with you through this coming week.

Have a "hoppy" Monday.

Mrs. Mason

Hello students and families.  It has been strange to not see your smiles and hear your greetings each morning.  Our array city art and Stuck Story book covers are waiting to be designed.  Even though you are on Spring Break as of tomorrow, please practice the 4X facts.  Knowing the multiplication facts will be VERY useful as you move through school (and life).

The llamas and other stuffies miss you, and so do I.

Despite all of the Spring Break plans that had to be changed, you are wished all the best next week as you find creative ways to spend your holiday time at home.

Please see the recommendations for activities for students on the CBE website - Learning at Home.

Best wishes to all of you.  Please check the Blog after Spring Break.  We will touch base with you again at that time.

Week of March 9 - 13, 2020

Thursday, March 11, 2020

Please note that an email was sent to our families this afternoon regarding the postponing of Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences.  The Book Fair has also been postponed.

Monday, March 9, 2020

Today we found a way to add strength and stability to shapes.  The secret is - TRIANGLES!

Last Week:

Math - continued working on multiplication concepts (skip counting, arrays, equal groups, writing and solving problems) - focus on 2X facts

Science - experiments with shapes of pillars and paper beams (which designs hold the most mass?)
- arch bridges and beam bridges

Social Studies - Venn diagram for Rosa Parks and Viola Desmond

Literacy - Guided Reading, Stuck Stories (editing and beginning final drafts), Homophones

Gym - Started soccer skills

Looking Ahead:

Math - multiplication (focus on 3X)
- problem solving with multiplication
- games to practice multiplication facts

Science - suspension bridges; trusses; stability of containers

Social Studies - discrimination and equal rights (for women and people of colour)

Literacy - continue working on final drafts of stuck stories
- begin investigating "voice" as a writing trait. (A strong sense of voice is achieved when the writer does a very good job of making a character seem real, and allows the reader to get to know the character or the person telling the story.) Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend is an example of a book with a strong "voice".
- continue reading The One and Only Ivan
- Guided Reading

Sunday, February 23, 2020

Week of February 24-28, 2020

Pink Shirt Day tomorrow - February 26, 2020

Last Week:

We built toothpick towers in Science, learning the importance of a wide base with a strong support system.

We started making paper vases that will hold artificial flowers.  The question is how to construct them so that they have stability.

We learned about Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and apartheid in South Africa.

- Continued with Guided Reading:  This is a Literacy Game that some students played.

- Worked on our Stuck Stories.  We have written story beginnings and have made our mouse have one attempt to get over the wall.  We compiled our ideas for getting over the wall and the students shared wonderful ideas.

In Math we solved addition and subtraction problems, and wrote some of our own.  We investigated the different ways to represent multiplication:

We also discovered that skip counting and skip counting on number lines are related to multiplication.

Next Week:

- We will have a subtraction and addition quiz
- We will practice multiplication with repeated addition, skip counting and equal groups
- Ms. Hasani will teach three literacy lessons
- We will continue writing our Stuck Stories, continue with Guided Reading activities and read more of The One and Only Ivan
- We will learn more about people who have fought for equal rights
- In Science we will investigate famous buildings and explore different types of shopping bags

(We have had only two students bring in shopping bags so may we please ask once again that your child bring in some shopping bags so that we can compare them.)

Please Note:  It would be helpful for students to start learning the basic multiplication facts up to 7X7=49.  Those students who have a good grasp of these facts not only find multiplication easier, they also have an advantage when solving division questions and applying them to fraction problems.
