Week of February 24-28, 2020

Pink Shirt Day tomorrow - February 26, 2020

Last Week:

We built toothpick towers in Science, learning the importance of a wide base with a strong support system.

We started making paper vases that will hold artificial flowers.  The question is how to construct them so that they have stability.

We learned about Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and apartheid in South Africa.

- Continued with Guided Reading:  This is a Literacy Game that some students played.

- Worked on our Stuck Stories.  We have written story beginnings and have made our mouse have one attempt to get over the wall.  We compiled our ideas for getting over the wall and the students shared wonderful ideas.

In Math we solved addition and subtraction problems, and wrote some of our own.  We investigated the different ways to represent multiplication:

We also discovered that skip counting and skip counting on number lines are related to multiplication.

Next Week:

- We will have a subtraction and addition quiz
- We will practice multiplication with repeated addition, skip counting and equal groups
- Ms. Hasani will teach three literacy lessons
- We will continue writing our Stuck Stories, continue with Guided Reading activities and read more of The One and Only Ivan
- We will learn more about people who have fought for equal rights
- In Science we will investigate famous buildings and explore different types of shopping bags

(We have had only two students bring in shopping bags so may we please ask once again that your child bring in some shopping bags so that we can compare them.)

Please Note:  It would be helpful for students to start learning the basic multiplication facts up to 7X7=49.  Those students who have a good grasp of these facts not only find multiplication easier, they also have an advantage when solving division questions and applying them to fraction problems.
